Who is the course designed for

This weekend Introduction to Colour Woodland and River Photography Course has been designed for photographers who are either thinking about making woodland and river photographs for the first time, or have decided to devote more of their photography to these two subjects and want some in-depth tuition to take their knowledge to the next level. It will also suit photographers who want to explore the fascinating techniques involved in longer exposures of moving water.

What level of experience do I need

This course is suited for photographers who are primarily looking for creative and compositional input into their photography, plus they also want to learn how to make long exposure photographs successfully. This means you'll get the most from the course and also enjoy it more if you already have an understanding for how your camera works in terms of aperture and shutter speed and the relationship between them; also about what depth of field is, plus the white balance and ISO settings.

You will need to be familiar with your laptop and be able to work your way around either Lightroom or Photoshop in terms of knowing how to access, rename and store your images. You'll also need to be able to transfer your photographs from the camera on to your laptop and then transfer them on to a memory stick for the review session.

You will be asked to convert your RAW photographs to colour for the review, although on this introductory level workshop don't worry if you have not learned how to do this yet as I will show you how.

How much does the course cost

My Weekend Introduction to Colour Woodland and River Landscape Photography Course costs £245. This includes all the tuition and transport to the locations, plus unlimited follow-up email and phone advice.

Book this particular course and you can save £50 on the cost of the follow-up Weekend Introduction to Colour Processing and Printing Course four weeks later on June 2 & 3, 2018

What's not included

Accommodation, meals and drinks.

Where is the course held

We are based at The Station in Richmond, North Yorkshire and will be heading out from there into Swaledale and Wensleydale to enjoy an excellent variety of woodland and river locations for our subjects.

When does the course start and finish

On both Saturday and Sunday we’ll start at 9am and finish at 6pm.

What will I learn

The course begins with guidance on how to develop an eye for spotting what does and doesn’t work as a potential colour woodland and river subjects. Next comes tuition out on location on compositional aspects specific to colour photography, both traditional and abstract. You will also gain an understanding for the techniques needed to use make rewarding long exposures of moving water.

Why should I choose a Garry Brannigan workshop

The group size is never more than five photographers, whereas other courses, workshops and tours often have many more. This smaller group size means you will receive more personal tuition out on location, plus we can visit more varied locations and have more elbow room when we get there. You will be encouraged and shown how to develop your own creative style and make photographs that are unique to you.

During our time together I work as hard as I can to create a fun and inspiring experience, while also providing photographers with a structured framework for instruction and learning. This means you will learn as much is possible during the course and leave feeling that you have developed significantly both your vision and the creative style of your photography.

Also included in the course fee is unlimited follow-up email and telephone advice. It's a combination that has been successful for more than 10 years, with a substantial number of photographers returning for further courses at different destinations, some for a fifth and sixth time as they look to develop their skills further.

Will my photographs be reviewed

Yes. It’s not easy to be objective about your own images, so one of the main ways to improve as a photographer is by putting yourself back into the position of the viewer and looking at other photographers' work. This also gives you the chance to put into practice what has been learned when we head back out again.

Does Garry make his own photographs

The majority of my time out on location is spent working alongside each photographer giving tuition on a one-to-one basis. As part of that teaching process, I use my camera as a practical way of demonstrating the compositional and technical process I go through to achieve my photographs and to also illustrate a location’s potential.

What type of camera do I need

Either a digital SLR or digital compact system camera with interchangeable zoom or prime lenses: wide-angle and telephoto. Ideally you will also have a macro lens, but it’s not essential.

Do I need a tripod

Yes, you will need a sturdy tripod and a remote release. Contact Garry before the course for advice on the best buys.

Do I need a laptop

Yes. You'll need to know how to transfer your photographs from the camera on to your laptop and be able to use imaging software to select your photographs and copy them on to a memory stick for the review.

Do I need Photoshop or Lightroom

Yes, so you can convert your RAW photographs for the review, although on this introductory level workshop don't worry if you have not learned how to do this yet as I will show you how.

Do I need filters

Please bring a set of neutral density graduated filters, plus either a Big or Little Stopper as these are what we use to make successful long exposures of moving water. Contact Garry before the course for advice on the best buys.

How fit do I need to be

Most of the walks to locations are short and on the flat, although some of the places we visit are away from the main paths and sometimes this means the terrain will be uneven or boggy and occasionally uphill.

How do I book a course

Email or phone 01748 821041 to check the place you want is still available and I will then send booking details.

How can I pay

Payments can be made using internet banking or cheques.

What do others think of Garry’s courses

I learned more on this course than all the magazine articles I have read and other courses I have attended, put together. The time you are prepared to spend with people out on location working with them one-to-one made it great value for money.
Greg Smart

Thank you so much for your patience and support throughout the weekend. I really enjoyed every minute. I thought the course was excellent and I certainly learnt a huge amount. Many thanks again for a wonderful learning experience.
Sheila Grey

Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the workshop at the weekend. It's easy to see why you have so many people who return on subsequent courses! The big positives for me were the support you gave all of us and then your ability to gently guide and give feedback in a way that was always very constructive.
Adrian Hazeldine

The course was more than value for money. If you compare similar courses and workshops, as I have, you will find that the cost of a Garry Brannigan course is one of the most reasonably priced, and having experienced other photography courses, Garry’s is by far the more superior.
