This is an introductory level course and has been designed for photographers who want to learn for the first time how to produce their own rewarding black and white prints in the digital dark room. Alternatively, you may have already made some initial early steps and want some tuition on how to take your processing and printing skills to the next level.
Don’t worry if you don’t have any previous experience of black and white post processing or printing. Because the group size is just five photographers, my tuition will be tailored to your own level of knowledge.
There’s no photography training on this course, but you will need to have some prior camera skills plus an understanding of the RAW format as you will need to have made the landscape images that you bring along to the course in the RAW format. To get the most from the tuition you will also need to be familiar with your laptop and be able to work your way around either Lightroom or Photoshop in terms of knowing how to access, rename and store your images.
My Weekend Introduction to Black and White Processing and Printing Course costs £245 and this includes all the tuition and an exhibition quality print made on Hahnemuehle fine art paper, plus unlimited follow-up email and phone advice.
Save £50 on the cost of this course if you also book the Introduction to Creative Black and White Wildflower and Macro Photography Course two weeks earlier on June 23 & 24, 2018
Accommodation, meals and drinks.
The Station in Richmond, North Yorkshire
On both Saturday and Sunday we’ll start at 10am and finish at 5pm.
You will learn an easily repeatable workflow that takes you from the first stage of converting your RAW colour file into black and white and then through each step in Lightroom and Photoshop. We then switch to Silver Efex and learn how to make the fine tonal adjustments that add finesse to your print.
The last session of the course explains about resolution and resizing your photograph before sharpening it ready for printing. Plus we’ll examine the huge variety of fine art papers that are available and how to use the right printer profile for your chosen paper. As the course draws to a close I will produce a professional quality print for you to take home.
The true expression of what inspires me in the landscape is not complete until I produce a successful print. Technology has moved on, but I still feel a strong urge to craft a rewarding print on fine art paper.
I have had three solo exhibitions of my work at The Station in Richmond, which is the venue for this course, and I’m always keen to encourage other photographers to print their own work because it really adds another significant layer of enjoyment and satisfaction to what you have achieved through your photography.
As with all my courses, the group size will not be more than five photographers. This smaller group means you will receive more personal hands-on tuition tailored to your own level of experience, either with Lightroom and Photoshop, plus Silver Efex. The cost also includes unlimited follow-up email and telephone advice after the course.
Yes, you will need to bring a laptop installed with Lightroom or Photoshop, plus Silver Efex, which is available as a free download.
Email or phone 01748 821041 to check the place you want is still available and I will then send booking details.
Payments can be made using internet banking or cheques.

Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the workshop at the weekend. It's easy to see why you have so many people who return on subsequent courses! The big positives for me were the support you gave all of us and then your ability to gently guide and give feedback on the results in a way that was always very constructive.
Thank you very much for a very enjoyable and informative course. My understanding of the subject is much better now. The print went down very well with the family and a trip to the local framers is in the offing. I certainly hope to attend another course in the future.
Thank you for the excellent course. I enjoyed every minute of it. I think your personal style works to perfection. I learned so much and you have really inspired me again. I am looking forward to my next course with you, if I can find a place. Now I know why they are booked up so quickly!
I really shouldn't say this: the course was more than value for money. If you compare similar courses and workshops, as I have, you will find that the cost of a Garry Brannigan course is one of the most reasonably priced, and having experienced other photography courses, Garry’s is by far the more superior.
