Photography has a great many attributes. Approaching the summit is its ability to record, to document for history. But I feel more of an artist than someone who documents, so for me its most rewarding quality is as a creative art.
What I try to express in the majority of the photographs I make is beauty in the natural world, often in the commonplace. The majority of the subjects I photograph are rarely spectacular and many would stroll past them without a second glance. But what extraordinary riches they miss!
Creating images in these quieter wild places has really opened my eyes to how photography can be used as a means by which the natural world is experienced, translated and to some degree understood. I also like the challenge of creating a visual dialogue between photographer and viewer.
Primarily I endeavour to make images that delight, but in addition I make others that provoke the viewer's curiosity and have more than one interpretation. This is why I tend not to take a record shot of the big view, and also why I have grouped the galleries here by subject rather than location as it is largely irrelevant where the photograph was made.
The main intention of the website is to celebrate the beauty of Britain's wild places. Curiosity about the natural world is a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, by adulthood many people have lost it completely; they are only interested in themselves and their immediate environment. Landscape photography is really my excuse for being out in wild places. It helps me keep my sense of wonder about the natural world and I hope that comes through in my photographs.
