Tidal Flow
Creativity is often fuelled by curiosity and whenever I visit Bamburgh in Northumberland I am driven by a child-like sense of wonder to explore the rock pools revealed along an extensive foreshore.
This image was made late on an agreeable April evening built of long shadows and warm spring light. The tide had turned, heading in, so two deadlines conspired against me. While minutes remained before the setting sun dipped behind Bamburgh's substantial dune system, a more pressing challenge was the rising level of the pool. Staring through the window of water to treasures below, I began to appreciate that the gentle flow of the incoming tide was fundamental to actually creating the image.
With each soft wave lap the broader tangle kelp radiated out, forming a sensuous curve that gave structure and balance to the base of the image. Tidal Flow is one of my favourite photographs for two reasons. Firstly, I adore the colour combinations brought about by the late evening light. Secondly, considering it was made at iconic Bamburgh, however hard you look you will not find a castle.
